11 Kenyan University students die in ghastly bus accident

Police claimed that eleven people were killed and 42 others were critically injured after a bus carrying students from a prestigious institution in Kenya skidded in heavy weather and crashed with a truck on a busy highway.

About 360 kilometres (220 miles) from Nairobi, the capital, the tragedy happened at 5:50 p.m. (1450 GMT) on Monday in Maungu while the Kenyatta University students were on their way to the coastal resort of Mombasa.

Police said that 42 people were critically hurt and that ten individuals died immediately upon impact and one more died later in the hospital.

“The driver of (the) university bus was overtaking a fleet of motor vehicles and as it was raining heavily, the bus skidded to the right side of the road,” the police report said.

This “prompted the driver of the truck to avoid head on collision, hence hitting the left side of the university bus,” it added.

There were fifty-eight persons on the academic trip in the bus.

The Kenyan Red Cross said on X, formerly Twitter, that the injured had been sent to a hospital in the neighbouring town of Voi.

Kenyatta University said on Tuesday it was “deeply saddened” by the accident and had set up a help desk at the main campus to provide “assistance during this challenging time”.

“Some of the injured students are in the process of assessment for possible evacuation to Nairobi,” it said.
