11 killed, many injured at assassinated Afghan governor's funeral
The Ministry of Interior reported that a blast on Thursday at a funeral service for an Afghan acting province governor who had been slain by a suicide bomber earlier in the week left at least 11 persons dead and 30 injured.
"The Ministry of Interior of the IEA condemns this brutality of the disgraced enemies,†a statement said of the blast, which happened at a service for Nisar Ahmad Ahmadi in Faizabad, capital of Badakhshan province.
Although the Islamic State group is still a concern, security has significantly improved since the Taliban swept back to power in August 2021, toppling a US-backed government and putting an end to their two-decade insurgency.
Ahmadi was killed on Tuesday when a suicide bomber rammed a car packed with explosives into his car, according to IS. In that assault, Ahmadi's driver also died, and six other people were hurt.
According to the interior ministry, "a great number of compatriots" had assembled for Ahmadi's funeral when the explosion occurred on Thursday at the Nabawi mosque in Faizabad.
