14 migrants discovered dead off Tunisia's coast
Over the course of 24 hours, 14 migrant bodies were found off the coast of Tunisia, according to the civil defence of Tunisia. It is unclear if a boat disaster occurred during that time.
More than 200 migrants who died trying to reach Europe have had their bodies found in recent weeks by the Tunisian coast guard. The majority of them, according to officials, are from sub-Saharan Africa.
After overtaking war-torn Libya, Tunisia is now regarded as the key transit country for migrants travelling to Italy.
Since President Kais Saied launched tighter crackdowns on migrants in February, accusing them of bringing violence and criminality into the nation, an increasing number of migrants have tried to flee Tunisia.
Since then, tensions and racist assaults have risen, and Tunisian authorities have detained a large number of people from sub-Saharan Africa.
A growing economic situation has led to an increase in the number of Tunisians looking to immigrate to Europe.
45,000 migrants have entered Italy by water so far this year, compared to 12,000 during the same period last year, according to the Italian Interior Ministry.Â
