148 confirmed dead in Bokkos killing, Plateau state

Residents of the recently attacked communities in the Plateau's local government areas of Bokkos and Barkin Ladi wouldn't have believed, only a few days ago, that they wouldn't be able to enjoy Christmas with their loved ones in peace, especially since many of them had started the celebrations in their own unique ways.

The attacks happened while locals were getting ready to celebrate Christmas this year. These recurrent incidents have clouded the holiday cheer throughout the state as well as in the affected communities, revealing a sombre atmosphere in light of the lives and property lost in the incident.

Monday On Thursday in Bokkos, Kassah, the Chairman of the Transition Committee of the Bokkos LGA, revealed that 148 people, including women and children, lost their lives in the attacks that occurred between Saturday night and Monday morning, while hundreds more were injured.

Vice President Kashim Shettima said 1,290 homes, 82 cars, and 187 motorcycles were set on fire in the 25 attacked communities during a condolence visit to the families of the affected residents.

Upon recounting their experiences at Central Stadium Bokkos, the temporary shelter for internally displaced people, the survivors displayed feelings of anger, resentment, and depression. Speaking with Daily Trust, many of them revealed that they had lost spouses, kids, or other loved ones. They claimed that the incidents had compelled them to leave their homes in pursuit of security.

“Realising that the attackers had already occupied our community, I started running but they were able to run faster than me,” said Christian Emmanuel who is receiving treatment at Alheri Clinic Bokkos.  “I then fell down. I started crying and begged them to leave me but they refused. They caught me and shot me. I begged them for the second time but they shot me again.”
