2023 POLITICS: INEC on Sunday has condemned calls from some unidentified quarters for Commission Chief Prof. Mahmood Yakubu to join 2023 presidential race
The INEC chairman's senior press secretary, Mr Rotimi Oyekanmi, described the calls as absurd and said it would not happen.
“Our attention has been drawn to insinuations in certain circles that Nigerians should not be astounded if the INEC chairman enters the presidential race.
"It's an absurd suggestion. It's not going to happen. The Chairman remains an arbiter committed to free, fair and credible elections.
"His duties as the Federation's chief electoral commissioner and Returning officer for the presidential election are so burdensome that he does not have the time to think about irrelevant matters that go against the law, morality and his principles," Oyekanmi said.
He added that Prof. Yakubu will continue to carry out his duties without affection or ill will towards political parties or candidates.
