30 PhD holders resign in Bauchi University over poor salary

At least thirty members of Sa'adu Zungur University (SAZU) in Q State have resigned from the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). ASUU's Bauchi Zone Zonal Coordinator, Namo Timothy, announced this on Friday at a news conference held at the university's Yuli Campus.

He clarified that due to inadequate management of the institution's operations and the welfare of its students, Sa'adu Zungur University, a state government-owned university, is in danger of closing.

While urging the Bauchi government to impose a state of emergency on the university in order to buck decades-long patterns of mishandled affairs, the ASUU coordinator issued a warning, saying that absent such action, the ASUU branch zone would no longer be able to ensure labour harmony between its members and the university administration.

He lamented that, unlike members of organised public service organisations across the nation, ASUU members at SAZU do not have access to a pension or death benefit plan.

He went on to say that the SAZU administration owed its members more than N650 million between 2012 and the present for Earned Academic Allowance and Excess Work Load Allowance.
