Abia State: Gov Alex Otti to recruit 5,000 teachers
The Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti has announced that his administration wants to recruit at least 5,000 teachers to replace the deficit in the basic and secondary schools.
Otti made the disclosure in his inauguration speech, immediately after taking the Oath of Office and Allegiance at the Umuahia Township Stadium on Monday.
According to him, the goal of his administration was to restructure the educational system to generate high-calibre students who could meet the demands of contemporary society.
He promised that he would work closely with his team and the pertinent stakeholders over the course of the following month to establish a suitable framework that would be utilized to guide the recruiting.
The governor said that priority would be given to young graduates in education, science, technology, engineering and mathematics and those willing to serve in rural communities.
He said, “We shall see to it that our teachers undergo regular refresher courses to update their knowledge and teaching skills so that they will stay relevant in their chosen fields.
“It must also be stated that under our government, teachers shall never be shabbily treated as reportedly had been the custom in the past.
“The paucity of infrastructure in our educational system shall be addressed stridently.â€
The state's commercial hubs, Umuahia and Aba, have been placed under a state of emergency for trash management and rubbish disposal.
According to him, this government should place a high priority on maintaining a healthy urban environment.
Therefore, he gave the State Environmental Protection Agency's leadership the order to deploy all of its resources and ensure that all refuse heaps within the two cities were swiftly evacuated.
