Abia teachers to commence strike over unpaid salary
The Nigeria Union of Teachers' Abia State Standing Committee has decided to go on strike on Thursday in protest of what they called "stringent measures on teachers" implemented by state governor Alex Otti.
This decision comes after discussions at a meeting of the Abia State Standing Committee on March 28 and an expanded gathering of NUT representatives from the national, state, and branch levels on Tuesday, March 4.
A 14-day ultimatum and a second seven-day notice to Governor Otti requesting an immediate resolution of the issues addressed or face industrial action preceded the strike.
The union voiced serious concerns about the welfare of its members in a statement released to reporters on Saturday and signed by State Secretary Mrs. Nnenna Okonkwo and State Chairman C. Madu Friday.
