Abuja police rescue woman confined in room for sixteen months

Ms. Grace Aniekuoku, 36, was rescued by the FCT Police Command after her brother allegedly imprisoned her in a room with shackles for over a year and four months.

Speaking about the development on Monday, CP Mohammed Sanusi, Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, stated: "The command received a distress report on June 12, 2026, alleging that the victim, an indigenous person of Anambra State, was being unlawfully detained under inhumane conditions by her brother, Mr. Chinedu Aniekuoku."

“A team of detectives from the Katampe Division was immediately deployed to the scene following receipt of the report.

“Upon arrival, the suspect became hostile and resisted the officers, refusing them access to the premises where he had confined his sister.

“However, the officers forcefully gained entry into the room and discovered the victim in chains, in an extremely emaciated condition and lying on her own waste under deplorable sanitary conditions.

“The suspect was promptly arrested, while the victim was rescued and rushed to a hospital, where she is currently receiving medical treatment.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had allegedly taken away the victim’s son to an unknown location about two years ago.”

According to the police, the extended detention was meant to keep the woman from wondering where her child was.

Sanusi stated that as the victim continues to receive medical attention and rehabilitation, attempts are being made to find and save the missing youngster.
