Actress Simisola Gold arrested over illegal exchange
Due to the lack of money, Nigerians are in a frenzy to get cash because it is hard to find it at banking facilities.
Numerous financial service providers—Point of Sales (POS) operators—have started hoarding cash and selling at inflated prices. Some Nigerians are also involved in this illegal activity for financial gain, including Simisola Gold, a reputedly well-known Yoruba actress.
The Nollywood actress was taken into custody on Wednesday, according to a public announcement made by Nigeria's Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
The actress is also a "serial entrepreneur" on social media who runs enterprises in skincare, fuel sales, facilitating international travel by obtaining visas, and other areas.
Simisola Gold, an actress, was detained for reportedly using social media to advertise the sale of brand-new naira notes.
The actress, who uses the handles "SimisolaGold" on Instagram and "Simisola of Lala" on Twitter, has closed her Instagram account while shuttering her Twitter account.
The ICPC admitted receiving information from an unnamed source and stated in a tweet on their official website that they suspected she was working with several financial service sectors to remove notes from banking halls.
“It is believed she is in collusion with key elements in the financial services sector diverting the newly released notes away from banking halls.â€
They also corroborated the information that she is now being held and cooperating with investigators.
“She is currently in ICPC detention and is helping the Commission with its findings on the criminal trading of the naira and the attendant scarcity and negative economic outcomes being caused by the action,†they wrote.
