Airline strike: Nigerians react as Nigerian airlines announce to go on an indefinite strike
Nigerian airlines have announced they will go on an indefinite strike from Monday 9 May 2022.
This was announced by the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) in a statement released Friday night, as they cited the rising cost of aviation fuel as the main reason for the suspension of operations.
They claim that the price of aviation fuel (JetA1) has suddenly increased from 190N per litre to around 700N, a development that has put enormous pressure on the sustainability of operations and the financial viability of airlines.
However, Nigerians have warned of the negative impact of the strike on Nigerians, citing increasing insecurity in remote areas of the country's highways, flying is the safest form of transport in Nigeria.
In recent years, many Nigerians have been quite concerned about road travel due to the activities of bandits and kidnappers. Even those who used to travel by train were discouraged after the recent terrorist attack on an Abuja-Kaduna train in March this year.
