Akwa Ibom NLC suspends strike as Gov Eno approves N80,000 minimum wage
Following the signing of a new minimum wage deal with organised labour by Governor Umo Eno prior to the deadline, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has cancelled its planned strike in Akwa Ibom State.
Sunny James, the chairman of NLC Akwa Ibom, made the announcement in Uyo on Wednesday.
According to him, a new minimum salary of ?80,000 will be paid by the state government on November 1, 2024. In addition, pensioners now receive a ?32,000 boost in their monthly pension.
James explained: “Following the signing of the New Minimum Wage Agreement on December 3, 2024, between the Government of Akwa Ibom and Organized Labour, we notify workers that the State Government has agreed to pay ?80,000 as directed by Governor Eno.
“Since November 2024 salaries have already been paid, the differential arrears will be settled on or before the end of February 2025. December 2024 salaries will reflect the agreed new wage.”
In accordance with a circular published on September 27 by the National Salaries, Income, and Wages Commission, the agreement also guarantees that retirees would benefit from the enhanced package.
The NLC praised Governor Eno for acting quickly and emphasised that employees are dedicated to improving service delivery and productivity in exchange.
The indefinite strike scheduled on December 4, 2024, has been suspended with this agreement, and employees have been instructed to return to work right away.
