Anambra government uncovers baby factory, rescues six pregnant women, arrests five suspects
During a raid on a "baby factory" in Umunya in the Oyi Local Government Area of the state on Wednesday, the Anambra State Government, working with security personnel, arrested five suspects and freed six pregnant girls.
Following the raid, the state's commissioner of health, Dr. Afam Obidike, informed reporters that the "baby factory"—named Mother and Child Hospital and Maternity—was situated on a road that ran beside Tansian University in Umunya and was where the babies were being sold.
According to Obidike, the discovery was made when the state's Health Facility, Accreditation and Monitoring Unit arrived at the facility for a normal inspection.
He continued by saying that when the medical attendants asked to speak with the on-duty physician to find out why the clinic was not registered with the state government, they locked up the property and fled.
He said, “Security operatives including OCHA-Brigade, civil defence corps and the police later assisted the monitoring team in gaining access into the facility.
“When we gained access to the facility, what we saw was shocking. We discovered six underage pregnant girls, between ages 14, 15, 16, 17 and 21 years, allegedly camped against their wishes.
“We interviewed these girls and they told us that they were being camped by one self-acclaimed doctor, who they identified as Mr Odili Ossai, from Delta State, now at large.
