Angela Okutoyi emerges first Kenyan Grandslam winner

Angela Okutoyi, a Kenyan tennis player, recorded a historic feat on Saturday afternoon, becoming the first Kenyan to win a Grandslam.

She made history alongside Dutch partner Rose Marie Nijkamp after her girls' double win at Wimbledon.

Okutoyi and Nijkamp beat Canadian duo Kayla Cross and Victoria Mboko in two sets to claim the history-making victory in the British capital of London.

The duo started the match on a low, with the Canadian girls winning the first set 6-3 in 27 minutes.

However, Okutoyi and Nijkamp fought back, forcing a tie break in 32 minutes with a 6-4 win in the second set.

They were not easily defeated in the lead and won the game-breaker 11-9.

Okutoyi and Nijkamp had beaten the pair of Nikola Daubnerova (Serbia) and Lucija Ciric Bagaric (Croatia) 6-3-6-4 in straight sets on Friday evening's semifinals.

En route to the final, Okutoyi and Nijkamp defeated Georgia Pedone (Italy) and Kaitlin Quevedo (USA) 6-4, 6-4, before beating Denislava Glushkova (Bulgaria) and Hayu Kinoshita (Japan) 6-2. 6-3

With a ticket to the quarterfinals, they beat the pair of Linda Klimovicova and Dominika Salkova of the Czech Republic 6-7, 6-4, 11-9.

The Kenyan tennis teenage sensation had shifted her focus to doubles after her singles run at her debut tournament was stopped in the first round of the main draw after losing 6-3, 6-2 to Canada's Mia Kupres.
