APC To Continue With Convention Without Statutory Delegates Despite Court's Ruling
The All Progressives Congress (APC) party wants to continue its special convention without statutory delegates, despite the decision of the federal high court in Kano. The party will hold the convention to choose its presidential nominee for the 2023 election on June 6-8. The court ruled on Friday that statutory delegates can participate in political party primary elections under Nigeria's constitution.
Judge A.M. Liman while delivering a verdict in a lawsuit filed by Masijde El-Jibrin Gogowa, a legislative aide to House Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila; Habibu Sani and Bilyaminu Shinkafi said Section 223 of the Nigerian Constitution and the APC Constitution "allow the statutory delegation (sic) to vote at any convention, convention or meeting". Statutory delegates include councillors, heads of local government and their deputies, governors and their deputies, and president and vice-president. Others include senators and members of the House of Representatives and state assemblies, as well as party leaders in the 774 local government districts.
