ASSU files appeal against National Industrial Court's judgement

According to Sunday PUNCH, the Academic Staff Union of Universities has once more appealed the National Industrial Court of Nigeria's decision ordering the lecturers on strike to report back to work.

Additionally, it was learned that the court had not yet set a date for the lawsuit's formal hearing.

This was revealed in an exclusive chat with our correspondent in Abuja on Saturday by the attorney representing ASUU, Femi Falana, SAN.

Falana, who also provided our reporter with the official appeal documents, mentioned that the union was still awaiting the appellate court's official hearing date.

According to the PUNCH, Industrial Court Justice Hamman Polycarp had ordered the academics on strike to return to work.

ASUU had filed an appeal with the Abuja Appeal Court, but the appellate court underlined that if the union did not abide by the lower court's decision, it would not hear the appeal.

On October 13, 2022, ASUU ended its strike in accordance with the decision.

Falana said that the appeal was submitted on October 14, 2022, though.

“The appeal was filed on October 14, 2022. However, no date for hearing yet,” Falana had said

Speaking further on Ngige’s advice for ASUU to take CONUA to court over registration, Falana said, “The minister knows that he deliberately committed illegality. He should have gone to court to find out the legality of his proliferation of unions among academic staff in the universities.”
