ASSU gets half salaries for October
According to information obtained exclusively by The PUNCH, the Federal Government only paid lecturers employed by the Academic Staff Union of Universities for 18 working days in October.
Professors and senior ASUU members emphasised that the government only paid half salaries in interviews with our correspondent, which were conducted in complete secrecy.
On October 14, 2022, The PUNCH reported that ASUU had ended its eight-month strike. The union pushed lecturers to start working again on that day.
Speaking with our correspondent, a senior member of the National Executive Council, said, “We were only paid for the days after the strike. I received a half salary. Other members are angry right now, they are blaming the NEC for calling off the strike.â€
Another member, who confirmed the development, said, “Yes, it is true, I received half salary. It seems the government is set to kill unionism in the country but we are ready for them.â€
According to PUNCH, the decision was made based on the fact that the lecturers resumed work in the middle of October, despite the fact that the FG has yet to explain why the half payment was made.
The national president of ASUU, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, who confirmed the development to our correspondent, said, “Yes, it is true and we are honestly shockedâ€.
According to The PUNCH, ASUU declared on Friday, October 14, that the strike, which had started on Monday, February 14, 2022, would be suspended.
The union said that it paused the strike in accordance with a court ruling in a statement issued and signed by Osodeke, stressing that the government had not yet complied with all of the requests that prompted the strike to begin.
