ASSU may soon call off strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities may end its indefinite strike on Thursday, barring a last-minute change (today).

Last Friday, the Court of Appeal ordered the union to end its strike.

The House of Representatives also weighed in on the situation, giving rise to the possibility that the union would end the strike shortly.

According to information obtained by The PUNCH, the majority of the union's 123+ chapters have finished holding congresses about the ongoing strike. While some colleges voted for the strike's suspension, others opted for a conditional suspension.

A source from PUNCH said, “No agreement was reached. Members agreed to follow the decision of the union’s National Executive Committee. Remember, we were on strike before the national body declared a strike.”

The situation was different at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, it was gathered that the branch voted in favour of “conditional suspension.”

Members of ASUU voted for suspension at the congress, which was held at the Federal University of Technology in Akure and also included ASUU representatives from the Adekunle Ajasin University in Akungba-Akoko, both in Ondo State, in order to comply with court orders.

“Members did not want to vote initially but you know ASUU is a union of intellectuals and we cannot be caught breaking the law. That was why we voted for suspension,” said a union member present at the congress.

Additionally, it was learned that Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria approved of a strike suspension under certain conditions.

Our reporters also learned that the branch at Usmanu DanFodiyo University voted for suspension based on the Appeal Court order.
