ASSU: Universities meet to discuss resumption

Our correspondent discovered that public institutions across the nation had scheduled special senate council meetings in anticipation of exams and resuming following the suspension of the Academic Staff Union of Universities strike.

According to The PUNCH, ASUU declared a suspension of the strike that started on February 14, 2022, on Friday, October 14.

The union said that it paused the strike in response to a court ruling while noting that the government had not yet complied with all of its requests in a statement by its national president, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke.

In advance of exams and when the Academic Staff Union of Universities strike was suspended, our reporter learned that public universities across the country had arranged special senate council sessions.

The PUNCH reports that on Friday, October 14, ASUU announced a halt to the strike that began on February 14, 2022.

In a statement by its national president, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, the union claimed that it had suspended the strike in response to a court order while stressing that the government had not yet cooperated with all of its demands.

The memo, which was signed by the institution’s Deputy Registrar, M.I. Owie, partly read, “The vice-chancellor, Prof Lilian Salami, has approved that the meeting of the provost, deans, and directors should be held at the senate chambers on Tuesday, October 18, 2022.”

The Senate Council will convene on Monday (today), according to a message from the Federal University of Lafia, with an emphasis on "reviewing the academic calendar."

The Federal University of Technology, Owerri, the Federal University of Dustin-Ma, Katsina, the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, and other universities have also planned meetings for the Senate Council for October 18, 2022.

Other institutions, including Sule Lamido University, have mandated that students return right away.

In a memo addressed to students and members of staff, the university management “encouraged students to resume back to school.”

The Tai-Solarin University of Education, the University of Port-Harcourt, the University of Calabar, and Bayero University Kano are some other institutions that have declared their return.
