Due to the non-implementation of the 2025 agreement between the union and the Federal Government, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Imo State University, IMSU, Owerri Branch, has launched a complete and indefinite strike.

On Monday, August 10, 2026, the union held a press conference at the Owerri university to announce the strike.

The decision, according to branch chairman Stephen Oguji and secretary Lazarus Chikwendu, was made in response to the Imo State Government and university administration's inability to carry out the agreement, which was signed by ASUU and the Federal Government on December 23, 2025, and was supposed to go into effect on January 1, 2026.

The union said that no significant reaction had been received despite multiple interactions with the university administration, the presenting of the agreement, and the delivery of a 21-day ultimatum.
