ASUU STRIKE: "End ASSU strike now, Ogun students protest

Vehicle activity was disrupted yesterday on the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway by Ogun students protesting the three-month extension of the strike by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

The students, under the auspices of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, and Ogun State Joint Campus Committee, stormed the Obada Axis highway with placards and sang anti-government songs.

Some of the inscriptions on their posters read: "End ASUU Strike Now", "Enough is Enough", "Nigerian Students are suffering" and "FG Listen to ASUU".

Speaking on behalf of the students, the head of NANS in Ogun State, Kehinde Simeon, said that the strike extension would increase insecurity in the country.

Kehinde said the federal government and ASUU members must come together and find a compromise to end the strike before students descend into anarchy.

He said: "It is so unfortunate that the federal government is playing politics with the lives of Nigerian students. We have been vocal since the beginning of this ASUU strike that action should be taken immediately, but it is evident that both the federal government and ASUU have chosen to ignore our agitation.

“It is so obvious that none of the children of these politicians, government officials and by extension ASUU is going to school here in Nigeria because if they had children here they would have solved this problem long ago when it started.

"And it's obvious that ASUU, on the other hand, isn't sincere with their fight because they need to know that at the end of the day, Nigerian students will always be at the receiving end. Since the beginning of this strike, we have expressed solidarity with ASUU on many occasions, and we expect them to be considerate.

“Our students are suffering and fed up. This whole problem is getting out of control and before it gets to the point where students and youngsters fall into anarchy, they should find a permanent solution to this problem.

“They should please do what is necessary and end the strike. The federal government should be listening, and ASUU should try to be sensible so that our students can get back into the classroom.”
