Atiku condemns military honours for Tinubu, demands probe
The military decorations given to Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, have been denounced by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who calls them a perversion of Nigeria's longstanding military traditions.
He described the occurrence as a flagrant breach of etiquette and demanded an immediate investigation.
Atiku criticised a video of Seyi Tinubu being given a formal military parade by a group known as the "Nigeria Cadet Network" in a statement issued by his media office on Sunday and signed by his media adviser Paul Ibe.
He claimed that only designated public officials are eligible for such honours and charged the group with compromising the military's integrity.
Atiku cast doubt on the "Nigeria Cadet Network's" legality, pointing out that early research showed it is not a recognised organisation inside the Nigerian military.
He voiced alarm over the group's gun use, particularly in light of the nation's continuous fight against the unlawful proliferation of weapons.
The former vice president listed three main areas that needed to be looked into: if the "Nigeria Cadet Network" is legitimate, whether the weapons on display during the parade are legal, and whether it is right to give a private citizen military honours.
He emphasised that preserving the integrity of the Nigerian Armed Forces is critical to maintaining public trust. “If any laws were broken, it is the duty of security agencies to ensure accountability,” Atiku stated.
Public outrage has been generated by the occurrence, and some have accused the administration of politicising military customs.
