Canada Shooting: Gunman opens fire in apartment and kills five

A gunman in Toronto, Canada, opened fire on building housing apartments, killing five people.

At 19:20 (12:20 GMT) on Sunday, police reacted to reports of a gunshot at a building in Vaughan, roughly 30 kilometres (19 miles) north of Toronto, and killed the suspect there.

Another injured person has been sent to a hospital and is in a critical state.

Authorities are looking into the shooter's possible relationship with the victims as part of their investigation into the motivation.

Upon arrival, authorities found a "horrendous scene," according to York police chief Jim MacSween, with multiple dead victims discovered in various flats of the building.

"We're in the process right now of doing notifications to those families, so at this point, I can't share any information on the victims or the subject," he said.

In a news release, Ontario's Special Investigations Unit, which looks into deaths involving police in the area, identified the deceased as a 73-year-old man.

The public, according to Mr. MacSween, is not now in danger, and according to York police, individuals who were evacuated can go home again.

Stephen Del Duca, the mayor of Vaughan, tweeted his condolences to the victims' families.

"I want to recognise the brave first responders who are working to safeguard the situation," he added.

Ontario's premier, Doug Ford, also offered his condolences, writing on Twitter that he was "shocked and saddened" to hear about the shooting.

"All of Ontario is thinking of the victims of this senseless violence and the family and friends grieving their loss," Mr Ford said.

Canada, which has fewer major shootings than the US but more gun violence recently, has recently passed legislation banning handguns as a result of this spike in gun violence.
