Chad’s military ruler Mahamat Déby wins presidential poll

Mahamat Déby, the military dictator of Chad, has been formally proclaimed the official victor of the presidential contest, solidifying his hold on power.

According to the state electoral commission, which cited interim results, Gen. Déby received 61.3 percent of the vote, while Prime Minister Succes Masra received 18.53 percent.

In the first round of voting, Mr. Masra had earlier declared that he had won a "resounding victory" and that the result had been "stolen from the people."

Following his father Idriss Déby Itno's death in an April 2021 battle with rebel forces, Gen. Déby, 40, was named Chad's leader by the armed forces. The Déby family's 34-year control will continue as a result of his triumph.

Following the results, followers of the ruling coalition poured into N'Djamena's streets to celebrate Gen Déby's win.

He pledged to serve all Chadians in his victory address, which was shared on social media: "those who voted for me and president for those who made other choices."

“I have a special thought for the unfortunate candidates who have lost the competition.”

In a live Facebook broadcast shortly before the results were made public, Prime Minister Masra declared victory and urged his followers and security personnel to thwart Gen. Déby's alleged attempt to "steal the victory from the people."
