Corps Liaison Officer allegedly assaults two female corps members in Enugu
Two female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members are alleged to have been assaulted by a Corps Liaison Officer (CLO) in Enugu East LGA, Enugu State, during a meeting last Saturday.
Because of his relationships with NYSC authorities, the CLO allegedly intimidated the victims and then boasted of being "untouchable."
A relative of one of the victims posted information about the event on X (previously Twitter) under the handle @JoiceofLagos, drawing attention to it.
The victim claimed that once law enforcement personnel got involved, the police were under pressure to drop the case. African Women in Public Service (AWiPS) responded by denouncing the attack in a statement on Monday.
AWiPS President Ugo Agwu-Nnachi signed the statement, which expressed outrage at the alleged intimidation and misuse of power. To guarantee justice for the victims, the group called for prompt, open action, including a comprehensive inquiry.
Agwu-Nnachi stated, “We are deeply disturbed by reports of an alleged assault by a CLO in Enugu State. The claims of abuse of power and a subsequent cover-up are serious violations of the victims’ rights and dignity, and require urgent redress.”
Concerns that law enforcement had been forced to drop the case, leaving the victims open to more threats, were also brought up in the statement.
AWiPS encouraged the NYSC to take all necessary actions to guarantee that justice is delivered as soon as possible and demanded a transparent inquiry.
“This incident is not an isolated case but a wake-up call for systemic change within the NYSC program,” Agwu-Nnachi added.
In addition to promising to keep a close eye on the case to guarantee justice, AWiPS reaffirmed its dedication to promoting the safety and dignity of all women and girls in public service.
