Court arraigns Lagos man for assaulting wife, daughter

A 46-year-old businessman named Kelvin Ibo was brought before an Ogudu Magistrates' Court on Friday for allegedly hitting his wife and hurting their daughter, who is 16 years old.

The defendant is accused of assault and indecently treating a child. The defendant is a resident of 10 Jimin Balogun Street, Ikosi-Ketu, Lagos.

According to the prosecutor, Insp. Donjour Perezi, Ibo committed the crime on January 30 at the family home around 2 p.m.

According to Perezi, Mrs. Oluchi Eze, Ibo's wife, stated to the police that her husband had been physically and mentally assaulting her since 2020.

He claimed that the defendant hurt their 16-year-old daughter while physically assaulting him and his wife.

”In the process of beating them, he poured away a pot of stew being prepared by the wife and broke a standing mirror valued at N150,000,” he said.

Perezi said that the offences were against Sections 135, 173, and 350 of the Lagos State Criminal Code, 2015.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), anyone found guilty of treating children indecently faces a seven-year prison sentence under Section 137 of the law.

The accused entered a not-guilty plea to the accusation.

The defendant was granted bail in the amount of N100,000 with two sureties in the same amount by Magistrate Ms. M.O. Tanimola.

The matter was postponed until May 3 for mention.
