Court rules dismissal of pregnant unmarried police officer illegal
Regulations 126 and 127 of the Nigerian Police, which permit the termination of an unmarried police officer who becomes pregnant while on duty, have been ruled unlawful by the Court of Appeal in Abuja.
In order to make sure that the Police Regulations meet the needs of a contemporary society that upholds the rule of law, the three-member court panel also ordered the respondents—the Attorney General of the Federation, the Police Service Commission, and the Nigerian Police Force—to thoroughly review the entire set of regulations.
The lead judgement, read by Justice Olubunmi Oyewole, was unanimously approved by Justices Bukola Banjoko and Okon Abang, the other panellists.
In the lawsuit brought by the appellants, the Nigeria Bar Association's incorporated trustees, against the three respondents, the court rendered a decision.
On February 15, 2021, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) filed an originating summons contesting the discriminatory practices of the Nigerian Police Force, sparking the start of the judicial struggle.
