Ekwue Joshua Femi was found guilty by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of defrauding American Sheedy Morgan out of $20,000. Femi was also given a one-year prison sentence.

After being charged by the Lagos Zonal Command of the EFCC, he was placed in jail by Justice O.O. Abike Fadipe of the Special Offences Court located in Ikeja, Lagos.

Two counts of charges pertaining to money laundering, obtaining property by deception, and impersonation were brought against the suspect.

One of the counts reads: “That you, Ekwue Joshua Femi, sometime in May, 2023 In Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable, with intent to defraud one Sheedy Morgan, a United States of America citizen, falsely represented yourself to be Mary Lanning Werner on your Facebook account and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 380 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.”

The judge ruled that the Federal Government of Nigeria would receive forfeiture of the convicted person's Mercedes Benz and cell phones.

In addition, he mandated that Sheedy Morgan, the victim, receive back all digital assets that had been taken from her.
