Court jails two Lagos men for duping businesswoman
Two scammers were each given a year in prison by an Igbosere Magistrate's Court sitting at the Ebute-Metta Magistrate's Court in Oyingbo, Lagos for defrauding complainant Hunyingan Pentho Ifeoluwa of N115,000 through Instagram transactions.
Oshodi Tunde Noah, 26, and Yusuf Sadiq Olarewaju, 24, were sentenced to prison by Magistrate T.A. Abayomi after they pleaded guilty to the three-count charges of conspiracy, obtaining property through deception, and theft brought by the Police at the Force Intelligence Bureau, Force Head Quarters, Annex, Lagos. The Police Counsel, Amedu Adoga, presented the case's facts to the court.
According to police, the defendants' path to prison allegedly began on January 15, 2023, in the Igboefun neighborhood of Lekki, Lagos, when they collected N115,000 from the complainant with the promise to sell and deliver a 1.5-horsepower air conditioner to her via Instagram transaction within 24 hours.
The police claimed that when the offenders received the money from the complainant, they did not give the complainant the air conditioner as promised and instead used the money for their purposes.
Crack detectives tracked the defendants to a hideout in Lagos and arrested them after the complainant waited days without hearing from the defendants about the air conditioner and their phone not working. She reported the situation to the Force Headquarters, Annex, Lagos.
At their arraignment, the defendants admitted guilt to the three counts of conspiracy, receiving money under pretenses, and theft.
Then, Magistrate T.A. Abayomi sentenced them to one year of imprisonment without the possibility of a fine for each of them.
