Court sacks Mohammed Abacha as Kano PDP governorship candidate
Mohammed Abacha, the son of the late Nigerian dictator Sani Abacha, has been removed from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP(Kano) )'s list of candidates for governor by the Court of Appeal sitting in Kano.
The court recognized Sadiq Wali, a co-petitioner with Mr. Abacha, as the PDP's candidate in the upcoming general election.
On Friday, the court overturned a previous high court decision that had recognized Mr. Abacha as the opposition party's nominee.
In its most recent ruling, the Court of Appeal also ruled that Mr. Wali, who had previously been recognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), would continue to represent the party's legitimate candidate for governor in the state.
One of the judges, Usman Musale, read the unanimous decision of the three-person panel and stated that since Mr. Abacha did not take part in the primary election that produced Mr. Wali, he had no locus standing to contest the results of the vote.
The most recent ruling in Mr. Wali's favor comes just a day after Atiku Abubakar, the PDP's presidential candidate, declined to support any of the rival candidates during a campaign event in Kano.
Mr. Wali, the son of Aminu Wali, a former foreign minister of Nigeria, contested a high court decision endorsing Mr. Abacha as the party's nominee.
