Court sentences four men to death by hanging in Lagos
Four men were given death by hanging sentences by a Lagos State High Court in Ikeja for the violent robbery and abduction of Mrs. Gloria Emole.
Ifeanyi Maduaka, Victor Chukwunonso, Obinna Nwankwo, and Richard Nwabueze, the defendants, are accused of committing the crimes on November 19, 2012, at around 8.30 am.
On July 13, 2013, a three-count charge of conspiracy, armed robbery, and kidnapping was brought against them by Lagos State, and they were arraigned and remanded in detention.
The victim was going to leave her home at 7, Unity Street in the Ogudu GRA neighbourhood of Lagos when she was kidnapped, according to Dr Babajide Martins, the state director of public prosecution, who testified in court.
The prosecution claims that the offences committed are against and punishable under Sections 297, 285 (2)a, and 291 of the Lagos State 2015 Criminal Code.
â€The victim was kidnapped on the 19 of November 2012 and was later released on the 22 of November 2012, after her husband paid a ransom of $70,000.â€
Earlier this week, Judge Lateef Lawal Akapo declared that the prosecution had established its case beyond a reasonable doubt. and gave the defendants a 10-year sentence on the first conspiracy offence.
"They are sentenced to death by hanging for the second count of armed robbery and sentenced to 21 years imprisonment for the third count of kidnappingâ€, Justice Lateef held.
