Court sentences Lagos man to 5 years in jail for drug trafficking
Oyeyemi Sharafadeen, 55, of Lagos, was given a five-year prison term for allegedly planning to sell ecstasy, rophynol, and tramadol abroad.
Sharafadeen allegedly committed the offense on January 9 at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, according to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
According to the agency, Sharafadeen violated Section 20(2)(a) of the NDLEA Act of 2004 by having tramadol, rophynol, and ecstasy in his hands during the inspection and clearance of cargo bound for Dubai. Sharafadeen was charged by the NDLEA with three counts, according to NAN.
He had entered a guilty plea in front of Judge Chukwujekwu Aneke.
Following his plea, the prosecution, Mr. Augustine Nwagu, submitted a number of exhibits to support the charge as the court assessed the case's facts.
The exhibits were admitted into evidence by the court.
Based on the evidence and Sharafadeen's guilty plea, Nwagu urged the court to find Sharafadeen guilty.
The defendant was found guilty on all three counts, and the judge sentenced him to five years in jail on each one.
But, he insisted that the conditions should be applied concurrently and offered him a five million naira fine as an alternative.
