Cross River magistrates begins indefinite strike
With effect from tomorrow, December 9, 2024, the Magistrates Association of Nigeria, or MAN, has instructed its members to close all of the magistrate courts in Cross River State.
In a notification released on Sunday, Solomon Abuo, the secretary, and Godwin Onah, the state's association chairman, said that the magistrates were going on an indefinite strike.
The notice states that full adherence to the order must be ensured by all magistrates throughout the state.
“All magistrates must adhere strictly to this Bulletin No. 2 by abstaining from performing all official duties including court sittings as from Monday 9 December 2024 till further notice.”
The order is a follow-up to a previous communique that was released on November 5, 2024, following a general meeting in which the Cross River State government was presented with eight demands.
“And it was also sequel to our letter to the Governor of Cross River State dated 11 November, 2024, wherein the Notice of Strike was extended to Friday 22 November, 2024 to enable the State Government to attend to our demands.
“And furthermore, in view of the Bulletin No. 1 dated 27th November, 2024 wherein we had embarked on a warning strike from 27 November 29th November, 2024, the government of Cross River State failed to address our demands as contained in our communiqué dated 5 November, 2024, or even taking any steps to negotiate with us.
“We are hereby embarking on an Indefinite Strike Action till our demands are met.”
