Cross River stops VIOs from road operations

Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) are prohibited from conducting road operations throughout the state by the Cross River Government. The governor limited the VIO's actions to their official responsibilities when he made the statement yesterday in Calabar.

His Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Linus Obogo, said in a statement that the instruction came after commercial bus drivers and tricycle operators protested hefty fines, expensive tickets, and alleged harassment by law enforcement.

The governor, who also made other sector-related announcements, stated that the measures were approved following a meeting with important transportation stakeholders.

The statement claims that additional announcements included a reduction in the daily ticket charge from N850 to N500 and a reduction in the penalty for not purchasing a ticket to N10,000.

“All traffic-related fines are being slashed by 50 per cent and must be paid only into designated Cross River Government accounts.

“Daily tickets for tricycle riders have been reduced from N1,200 to N500, however, every activity of commercial tricycle operators ends at 6 p.m. daily, night operations are permanently banned,” Otu asserted.

According to him, the review's goals were to lessen the load on drivers and bring order back to the state's transportation infrastructure.

The governor went on to say that the Commercial Transport Regulatory Agency (CTRA) would now concentrate on car registration and ticket sales at authorized prices.
