Delta residents laments hike in transport fare despite reduction in petrol prices
Transport costs in Warri, Effurun, and nearby towns in Delta State have not altered despite the recent drop in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS); in fact, certain routes have seen increases since the holiday season.
Over the weekend, an inquiry found that the drop in fuel prices has not been reflected in the cost of intra- and interstate transportation.
The price of petrol in Warri is currently between N970 and N1,060 per litre, which is less than the N1,200 price that was reported in October 2024.
However, the current drop in PMS prices has not been reflected in the adjustment of transport expenses, which had gone up by almost N200 during the fuel price surge. Commercial drivers blame the high expense of vehicle upkeep for the predicament.
“Motor parts and engine oil are still very expensive, so you don’t expect the fare prices to change just like that,” said Sammie, a driver operating the Effurun Roundabout to Hausa Quarters route.
However, the unchanging fares have angered commuters, who are calling on the government to step in and provide subsidised mass transport vehicles. As petrol prices continue to drop, many worry that Nigerians would never receive the promised relief if nothing is done.
