Diphtheria Outbreak: 130 hospitalised in Kano
As the number of cases of diphtheria in the state increased to over 130, the Kano State Government constructed three treatment facilities.
Dr. Abubakar Yusuf, the state's commissioner for health, revealed this on Thursday and said that the state had put in place the essential controls to stop the disease's spread.
He revealed that as the situation grew, more than 130 people were admitted just on Monday.
Yusuf, who provided an update on the disease epidemic, bemoaned the fact that a state like Kano should not be dealing with such an outbreak due to the previous administration's failure to immunise the populace.
He said, “Governor Abba Yusuf has since directed the ministry to swing into action to curtail the spread of the deadly disease. Three designated centres have been provided for treatment and admission.
“The general public should not hesitate to seek medical assistance whenever they experience any of the symptoms listed by the Nigeria Centre for Disease and Control.â€
Similar to this, in Kwara State, Dr. Nusirat Elelu, the Executive Secretary of the state's Healthcare Development Agency, announced on Thursday that the state had expanded immunisation of children and infants to 388 healthcare facilities in the state to protect against diphtheria and other child diseases, including poliomyelitis.
