Doctor dies as elevator crashes at Lagos hospital
According to reports, a lift accident at General Hospital in Lagos claimed the life of a Nigerian doctor named Vwaere.
On Tuesday, as Vwaere was inside the lift, it dropped from the building's tenth story, according to Twitter user @lx_amara.
“A doctor who had just 2 weeks to complete her housemanship just died in general hospital (Odan, Lagos island) due to poor management and negligence. The elevator she was in, fell from 10th floor to the ground! Video was so painful to watch,†a post on Twitter reads.
According to reports, the deceased was en route to the bottom level, where she was scheduled to receive a delivery from a dispatch rider.
The victim was reportedly brought out of the wrecked lift after approximately an hour, and then she was transferred to the emergency hospital, where she tragically passed away.
“Particularly aggrieved because we’ve complained for a long time about this elevator. We’ve maneuvered, managed and prayed each time we had to use it. Empty promises will be made to fix it….till it killed one of us,†she wrote.
The doctor, who had two weeks remaining to finish her housemanship, was reportedly a graduate of Grady Babcock University.
Some Nigerians have resorted to social media since the incident became public to discuss their experiences with the hospital, namely with the lift.
The Lagos state government was made aware of the hospital's lift by a tweet sent by the medical guild in 2020.
“The doctors quarters at General hospital Lagos has 10 floors. It has a non-functional elevator and no running water,†the tweet reads.
“Doctors who live on the 10th floor including pregnant women climb the stairs multiple times daily.
“Are we going to wait till someone dies before things are done properly?â€
