Dr Olayemi Cardoso starts duty as CBN confirms Emefiele's resignation
Dr. Olayemi Cardoso, the candidate for governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, formally started his duties on Friday.
Cardoso took over as acting governor of the CBN while the Senate, which is presently in session for the annual break, considers whether to confirm him, according to a statement from Dr. Isa AbdulMumin, director of corporate communications at the CBN.
It was also mentioned that the incoming deputy governor took over when the outgoing deputy governor resigned.
The statement read, “Dr. Olayemi Michael Cardoso, recently nominated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has on Friday, September 22, 2023, formally assumed duty, in an acting capacity, as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, pending his confirmation by the Senate. This follows the resignation of Mr Godwin Emefiele as Governor of the CBN.
“Similarly, the Deputy-Governors-Designate have also assumed duty, in acting capacities, sequel to the formal resignation of Mr. Folashodun Shonubi, Mrs Aishah Ahmad, Mr Edward Adamu, and Dr. Kingsley Obiora as Deputy Governors of the CBN.â€
Emem Usoro, Muhammad Abdullahi-Dattijo, Philip Ikeazor, and Bala Bello are the candidates for deputy governor.
The statement said that on Friday, September 20, 2023, a brief ceremony was held at the Bank's head office in Abuja during which Dr. Cardoso and his coworkers took the appropriate oaths of office.
They have subsequently started working on implementing the federal government's monetary and financial sector policies, it was further said.
