Driver dies as commercial bus crashes in Lagos
Yesterday, a commercial bus driver was killed after his bus collided head-on with another bus operated by the Lagos Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) at Ifako in the state's Ogudu region.
According to reports, the commercial bus driver lost control due to overspeeding and died instantly as a result. The bus somersaulted twice.
Officials from LASTMA rescued seven people with varied degrees of injuries, according to Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, director of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), who confirmed the accident.
Adebayo claimed that preliminary findings of the investigation showed that the accident occurred when the fully filled commercial bus was travelling from Lagos Island to Ogudu.
He said, “LASTMA has carried out a series of enlightenment campaigns warning motorists particularly commercial bus drivers to stop overspeeding and adhere strictly to speed limit signs erected by the government across the stateâ€.
When some hoodlums learned that the commercial driver had died and that his body was next to an overturned commercial bus, they set fire to the bus operated by the Lagos State Bus Service Limited. At the same time, emergency personnel at the scene, including traffic police officers, were assisting LASTMA officials.
Bolaji Oreagba, the general manager of LASTMA, has cautioned the public, in particular street children, not to impose their own rules at accident scenes but rather to let the proper authorities handle the problem.
