Drug Trafficking: NDLEA seizes drugs worth #6 billion from traffickers
The National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency's Apapa Area Command said it had seized 19,703.25 kg of hard drugs worth over N6 billion between January and June 20.
Its commander, Ameh Inalegwu, made the announcement to the Nigeria News Agency in Lagos on Saturday.
He said the command is ready to contain the threat posed by illegal drug dealers in the nation's maritime space.
"This is already confirmed by the numerous seizures that have been recorded in a few months," said Inalegwu.
He added: "The drugs seized over seven days included 1,518kg of tafrodol and tramadol weighing 3,553kg.
“This is in addition to seizures of codeine cough syrup in January, 40.25kg of the same codeine cough syrup in February, and 12kg of another codeine cough syrup in March.
“The command also seized 350 grams of cocaine and 150 grams of heroin in March.
"In summary, between January and June 20, the command recorded a total seizure of 19,703.25 kg of various illegal drugs," he said.
"The Command's operation in the Sea Corridor has saddled him with the responsibility of waging war on drug cartels.
“NDLEA recognizes the seaport's status as a gateway and the vast opportunities it offers to ship hard drugs in bulk.
“The quantities far exceed what can be smuggled in by land or air.
"NDLEA would, however, make the port impervious to the cartels."
Inalegwu praised the chairman of the NDLEA, the retired brigadier general. Buba Marwa, for restarting the war on drug cartels.
