EEDC set to shut old prepaid meter Nov 24
Residents of the South-East were advised by the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) on Sunday to upgrade their pre-paid meters by November 24.
In Enugu, Mr. Emeka Ezeh, the Head of Corporate Communications for the EEDC, told reporters.
“This is due to the Token Identifier (TID) rollover, an exercise that affects all Standard Transfer Specification (STS) compliant prepaid meters across the globe,” Eze said.
As you may remember, EEDC informed South-East households in a number of engagements and education programs that, unless they were upgraded, all STS prepaid meters would stop accepting credit tokens on November 24.
According to Ezeh, the EEDC successfully switched to "SuperEdge," its recently purchased vending system, in order to ensure a seamless update.
He claims that prepaid meters that have not been updated will no longer accept new tokens, but they will continue to function until the energy credits that are now placed into them are depleted.
“Consequently, customers who have not recharged their prepaid meters since February 2024, will have their very first recharge come with the Key Change Tokens (KCTs).
“These are three sets of 20-digit tokens needed for the upgrade, which customers are expected to punch into their prepaid meters.
“The first 20 digits will be punched into the meter, after which the customer should press the “enter” button; the same should be done for the second 20 digits and the third 20 digits, to have the meter upgraded.
“This exercise is free and at no cost to customers,” he said.
Before distributing the three sets of 20-digit tokens, the EEDC spokesperson advised customers who still had tokens that they had previously purchased but had not yet put onto their meters to load them.
