EFCC arrests Chinese brothers, two Nigerians for mineral theft
Two Nigerians, Donatus Agupusi and Michael Agu, as well as two Chinese, Wang Jiang and Wang Richard, have been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for trying to export solid minerals without the required licenses.
Dele Oyewale, the EFCC's Head of Media and Publicity, said in a statement that the arrest came after the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria provided intelligence on November 3, 2024.
When Jiang was stopped at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu for a security check, three different packages containing stones that were thought to be solid minerals were found in his luggage.
According to the inquiry, Jiang planned to visit China in order to conduct mineral testing. Oyewale added that the other suspects, who all lacked permission to export the minerals, were employed by Agupusi, the owner of Great Wall Construction Limited.
Oyewale explained, “Operatives of the Enugu Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, have arrested two Chinese siblings: Wang Jiang and Wang Richard for allegedly making efforts to export solid minerals without a requisite permit.
“Their arrest followed intelligence received from FAAN, involving Jiang, who was intercepted at the hold baggage screening point, where unidentified stones believed to be solid minerals wrapped in three packages were found in his luggage.”
He went on to say that after the inquiry is over, the suspects will face charges.
