EFCC, INTERPOL Arrest Three Nigerians For Internet Fraud

The International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) and the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) have arrested three Nigerians for alleged internet fraud. Interpol said in a statement published on its website that the suspects allegedly used a malicious Remote Access Trojan (RAT) to steal confidential online details from corporate organizations. The affected cooperate organizations are said to be located in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and North Africa. Interpol declared that the suspects were arrested in a covert operation codenamed "Killer Bee" carried out in the Ajegunle axis of Lagos and Benin in Edo state. The agency announced that Hendrix Omorume, one of the suspects, was charged with three counts of aggravated financial fraud and sentenced to one year in prison. Craig Jones, Interpol's director of cybercrime, said that millions would have been lost had Interpol not alerted the EFCC. "Through its global policing network and constant surveillance of cyberspace, INTERPOL has the intelligence from around the world needed to alert Nigeria to a serious security threat that would have left millions lost without swift police action," Jones said. More arrests and prosecutions are planned around the world as intelligence continues to flow in and investigations continue.” For his part, Abdulkarim Chukkol, head of EFCC operations, said commission partners Interpol to keep up with new technologies and understand how they are used by criminals.  “Cybercrime is expanding rapidly, with new trends emerging all the time. Through operations like Killer Bee, INTERPOL works with EFCC to keep up with emerging technologies and understand the opportunities they create for criminals and how they can be used as tools to combat cybercrime," Chukkol said.  "Nigeria-led and INTERPOL-coordinated enforcement efforts are sending a clear message that cybercrime will have a severe impact on those involved in commercial email compromise fraud, particularly in Nigeria."
