EFCC refuses to bring Emefiele to court
Despite a directive from the Federal Capital Territory High Court the previous Thursday, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission did not appear in court on Monday with Godwin Emefiele, the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
The commission was mandated by the court to either free Emefiele or bring him in for a bail hearing.
In Monday's court proceedings, the former governor of CBN was noticeably absent. Mathew Burkaa, Emefiele's attorney, charged that the EFCC disregarded the court's ruling.
He said, “They have flouted both orders, as today marks the 149th day of the applicant being in custody.
“The applicant is still in the custody of the 3rd and 4th respondents, up until this moment that we speak.â€
Farouk Abdullahi, the EFCC's attorney, responded by acknowledging that the commission had received the order but refuting the assertion that the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria had been under their custody for more than a hundred days.
He went on to say that it was not their intention for them to disobey the order. Abdullahi brought up the fact that some exhibits—most notably exhibit E—were not attached to the order.
Judge Olusegun Adeniyi, who is presiding over the proceedings, adjourned them until November 8 and reiterated his earlier directive that the EFCC release Emefiele unconditionally or bring him before the court on the following postponed date to discuss bail.
