Eight dead, 11 hospitalized after consuming toxic alcoholic drinks
Eight people have purportedly died and eleven more are in serious condition as a result of consuming lethal alcoholic beverages in certain areas of Ogun State.
This was revealed in a statement released on Sunday by the Ogun State Government.
However, the government issued a warning, alerting citizens to the serious risks involved with ingesting locally made alcoholic beverages and other items that have not been endorsed by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control.
According to the statement from Dr. Tomi Coker, the Special Advisor to the Governor on Health, there have been reports of 11 cases of serious illnesses and eight fatalities that can be directly attributed to consuming locally brewed alcoholic beverages.
According to him, the state government has taken steps to educate the public about the potential risks connected with consuming locally-made alcoholic beverages and other items that have not been given the NAFDAC seal of approval.
Coker claims that the incidents allegedly happened in Ogun State's Ijebu-North East and Odogbolu Local Government Areas between July 18 and July 20, 2023.
She continued by saying that a thorough inquiry into the origin and make-up of the dangerous products had been launched by the Ministry of Health.
While the inquiry is ongoing, she cautioned the public to use extra caution and avoid consuming drinks from unreliable sources.
