Eight discovered dead crossing into US from Canada
According to officials, eight persons, including two children, were discovered dead in a marsh not far from the Canadian-American border after attempting to enter the country illegally.
According to authorities, their bodies were found close to a boat that belonged to a missing man from the Akwesasne Mohawk community that had capsized.
“A total of eight bodies have now been recovered from the waters,†local police chief Shawn Dulude told a press conference.
One youngster under the age of three was among the initial six persons from two families, one of Romanian heritage with Canadian passports and the other from India, that were found late on Thursday.
Two more people were reported found at the Friday press conference by Dulude, an infant “Canadian citizen of Romanian descent, and one adult female believed to be an Indian national.â€
They were allegedly trying to enter the United States illegally from Canada, according to Canadian authorities.
The Quebec and Ontario provinces in Canada and the state of New York in the United States are both bordered by the Mohawk tribal territory.
For the bad weather, which included rain, sleet, and strong winds, the capsized boat was described as "extremely small."
“It was not a good time to be out on the water,†local deputy police chief Lee-Ann O’Brien told a news conference earlier in the day.
Dulude went on to say that such crossings were occasionally made possible by locals, especially young people who were drawn in by the money and taken advantage of by criminal organizations.
