Ekweremadu's wife, Beatrice released from UK prison, returns to Nigeria
Beatrice, the wife of former deputy senate president Ike Ekweremadu, has returned to Nigeria after being released from prison in the United Kingdom. Beatrice came back to the nation three months ago, a family member told the BBC on Wednesday.
Under the UK's Modern Slavery Act of 2015, Ekweremadu, Beatrice, and medical professional Obinna Obeya were found guilty in March 2023 of planning to trade a young man for the purpose of harvesting his organs. The conviction in this case was the first of its sort under the law.
Obeta received a 10-year prison sentence, his wife received a 4-year, 6-month sentence, and Ekweremadu received a 9-year, 8-month sentence on May 5, 2023.
The trial judge, Jeremy Johnson, decided that Beatrice should be in jail for half of the sentence and be out on licence for the other portion.
Johnson further maintained that while determining Beatrice's prison sentence, the duration of her custody and the time she spent under electronically monitored curfew should be taken into account.
