Elon Musk declares that he will lift Twitter's ban on Donal Trump
Donald Trump's Twitter ban could be reversed as long as entrepreneur Elon Musk completes his social media purchase, Tesla CEO himself revealed.
Musk, the world's richest person and CEO of electric vehicle maker Tesla Inc (TSLA.O), has signed a $44 billion deal to buy Twitter Inc (TWTR.N). He has described himself as a "free speech absolutist" but gave few specific details about his plans. Musk is expected to temporarily become CEO of Twitter after the deal closes.
This Tuesday, the billionaire entrepreneur was part of FT Live's "Future of the Car" conference and wasn't shy about speaking out about Twitter sanctions like those imposed on Trump.
"Permanent bans should be extremely rare and reserved for accounts that are bots or scam or spam accounts... I think it wasn't right to ban Donald Trump, I think that was a mistake because it alienated a vast part of the country and ultimately did not result in Donald Trump losing his voice," Musk said.
Though Twitter accepted the entrepreneur's takeover bid on April 25, Musk said the deal will have to wait two to three months to close, though he has indicated there's still a chance the acquisition won't close.
“I would reverse the permanent ban, I don't own Twitter yet. So that's definitely not going to happen, because what if I don't own Twitter?†said the billionaire.
It's still unclear if Trump would agree to use that social media again if Musk were responsible for lifting the bans on Twitter, as the former president has assured that no matter what happens, he'll only remain on his Truth social platform.
