Elon Musk's daughter files a request for a name change
Elon Musk's transgender daughter submitted a name change request to reflect her gender identity and also removed her last name to cut ties with her father, who is a business mogul.
According to court documents filed on April 18 by Los Angeles County Superior Court in Santa Monica and obtained by USA TODAY, Musk's 18-year-old daughter in the petition for a new birth certificate said the decision to change her name was for two reasons: To reflect her gender identity and because "I no longer want to live with my birth father or be related to him in any way."
A hearing on the name change is scheduled for Friday and the online court documents were released by multiple media platforms on Monday.
Musk's daughter's former name, which appears on her birth certificate, was formerly Xavier Alexander Musk. The new name she requested has been redacted in online documents. Her mother is Justine Wilson, who divorced Musk in 2008. Musk had six children with the Canadian author. The first child they had together, Nevada Alexander Musk, died of sudden infant death syndrome at just 10 weeks.
Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, is currently trying to acquire the social media platform Twitter for $44 billion. His comments about trans people caused controversy in 2020 when he tweeted, "I totally support trans but all these pronouns are an aesthetic nightmare."
