Ex-Ivory Coast president Konan Bedie dies at 89
Henri Konan Bedie, the former president of Ivory Coast, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 89. Bedie was a member of the political elite that ruled the country for a period of time.
Bedie held the office of president from 1993 until his removal in 1999. Later, in the 2020 elections, at the age of 86, he lost to President Alassane Ouattara, his longtime nemesis in politics.
It's unclear how Bedie passed away.
Commentary could not be obtained from his spokesperson.
He was long remembered for his support of the "Ivoirite," or Ivorian identity, cause, for which he was also hated in some quarters.
Tensions between the many migrant labourers from neighbouring countries who had long resided in the country's north and those who identified as locals in the country's south and east were exacerbated by this issue.
